Rhinitis
Allergy, Allergens and Allergic Disorders - Symptoms, Treatment and DiagnosisRhinitis is a condition shown by a swelling and sore redness in the lining of the nose, or inflammation of the mucous membrane of the nose. There are different types of rhinitis caused by different factors, such as viruses, allergy-causing substances and irritants.

Seasonal Allergic Rhinitis

Seasonal allergic rhinitis, otherwise known as hay fever, is caused by pollens from trees, grass and weeds which travel in the air and irritate the lining of the nose, producing uncomfortable symptoms for the sufferer.

Perennial Allergic Rhinitis

Perennial allergic rhinitis shows similar symptoms to seasonal allergic rhinitis, except they appear all year round, not just when pollen counts are high. Perennial allergic rhinitis is caused by allergens, such as dust mites, animal hair, mould and insects.

Irritants such as cleansers, detergents, smoke, cooking odours, paint fumes, perfumes and other similar substances can all cause perennial allergic rhinitis.

The viruses and bacteria carried by these substances all cause a wide range of symptoms, but typically the nose area and throat are affected. As the symptoms mimic the common cold it can be difficult to diagnose this form of rhinitis.

Treating Rhinitis

The best form of treatment is to minimise exposure to the allergens or irritants which are causing the rhinitis.

- Ensure living and sleeping areas are cleaned regularly.

- Look into using allergy-proof covers for pillows and mattresses.

- Remove mould and dust from rooms where a lot of time is spent.

- Wash sheets and pillowcases regularly in hot water.

- Clean rugs, furniture and curtains regularly.

- Avoid smoking indoors and around sufferers.

- Avoid paint fumes if possible and ensure rooms are well ventilated if painting.

- Avoid cleansers and detergents with fumes or perfumes.

- Pay attention to household humidity, as too much humidity can promote mould growth.

- Close windows when pollen counts are high and stay indoors. The same applies to pollution levels.

Medical Treatment for Rhinitis

If the rhinitis symptoms become difficult to treat via avoidance, antihistamines, decongestants and nose sprays can be used as an alternative treatment.
